Learning In Las Vegas

On the Road Again.....

I am heading to Las Vegas today for my Mastermind Meeting followed by the best Speaking and Marketing Bootcamp on the Planet. This will be my third time attending this bootcamp and it keeps getting better. I always walk away with so much knowledge and I have the opportunity to network with some great people and fantastic business minds.

Questions On Multi-Directional Speed Program Design

Some of my favorite questions to receive have to do with program design for multi-directional speed. Trainers and coaches often get caught up in progressions and increasing intensity that they forget about continual programming of efficient skill production. To me, most speed skills, regardless of if it is lateral, retreating, linear acceleration or change of direction, all needs to be performed at a high level of efficiency and correctness. If I want to make the athlete faster, then I need to do it in the weight room.

There is a technique I use termed the "Shock method". The purpose of this method is to periodically introduce resistance acceleration with a band or tubing. This not only increases power output through stimulating the nervous system but it changes what the athletes has been doing and therefore offers a new stimulus.

In my opinion and experience, you have to be careful to not over-use the resisted method when coaching multi-directional speed skills. Any time you add external resistance you are inevitably changing the fine mechanics of the skill. When resisted the athlete will change his or her technique just enough to counter the resistance. The ultimate goal is to program the movement pattern so efficiently in the athletes brain that they can recall it quickly and effectively all the time.

I beleive it is a powerful tool, but it must be used wisely and sparingly.

Let me give you a quick example, or rather a comparison, of this form of programming skill development. When a basketball player practices foul shots and becomes good at it, then he or she doesn't add 5lbs to the ball to progress. The goal is to continually grove the pattern so it becomes automatic- even under pressure, especially under pressure.

What does this tell you about program design for multi-directional speed development? Basically, you can set your skills up in such a way that each plane of movement is being trained on a given day with change of direction skills being included on non-consecutive days. Here is a basic example of a 4 day a week program:

Day 1- Linear Acceleration skills and linear force production

Day 2- Linear Deceleration skills and body control/change of direction

Day 3- Lateral/Angular force production and acceleration skills

Day 4- Lateral/Angular Deceleration skills and body control/change of direction

You could just as easy switch day 2 with 4 if you wanted to alternate linear and lateral days.

Personally, I don't like to do hard deceleration/change of direction days back to back.

This is just a little bit of information that will help you in designing speed programs. My Speed Insiders Members receive first hand how I train athletes to be faster. If you want to know more, become a Speed Insider... to give it a try http://www.speedinsiders.com/ and receive 2 months trial totally FREE.

As you may know by now, I am hosting my Athletic Speed Formula Seminar On May 16th-18th. Travel, Travel, Travel...

Hey All,

I just arrived back home from NY. I went to my Speed Academy in Queensbury, NY for a few days to meet with some people and see the athletes and parents. I miss not seeing them all the time. Just prior to going to NY, I was in Chicago speaking at the Perform Better Summit, which was awesome as usual. On Monday I am flying to Las Vegas for a mastermind group I am apart of. I will also be attending a marketing boot camp. Basically, I am living on the road most of this month. It doesn't get any better next.

The important thing about all this travel is it is activity toward my goals from both a professional and personal standpoint. Each trip allows me to gain more knowledge and gets me closer to my goals. It is all about investing in myself. Sure I miss my children's and wife. It is difficult to be away from them. But they know what I am trying to do for them. I want our future to be as FREE as possible. I want to be able to spend all the time I want with them, so I have to put the work in now.

One of the difficult parts of this financial distress the US is in right now is that it has caused me not to have a lot of extra cash just floating around. My wife and I have to sacrifice a lot to keep our dreams alive. If I don't have the money for something, then I find it. I am not going to let excuses be the reason I don't get what I want and deserve. It really comes down to the fact that I am tired of the old excuses I use to make. I am convinced my success or lack of success in any time frame through out my life has been directly related to me using excuses or refusing to use excuses. I use to think other people had to play a bigger role in my success. I now know I AM THE ONLY ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR MY SUCCESS! No one else is responsible for my financial success, happiness, freedom, or productivity. It all stops with me.

When I am sitting in the airport waiting for my flight I constantly remind myself this is an investment in my future. It is a good thing, not a bad thing. The troubles of going through the airport are just part of the deal for me to get where I want in life.

I am sharing this with you because I know so many people struggle to make the decision to part with money to attend seminars, to start a new product, or to invest in marketing materials. The bottom line is, you have to invest in these things if you want to get what you want. The excuses will keep you from attaining everything you want. I know, I have been there.

Marketing Clinics

I have spoken many time on marketing clinics and how powerful they are to gain access to schools, youth sporting organizations, or any program that might be interested in you hosting. Or you can use the marketing clinic to drive business to your training facility as I do.

The marketing clinic is a strategy to help the school or organization you are targeting because you will present them with valuable information they need and want. It will benefit you because it sets you up as an expert in the niche area that the school or organization is looking for.

The key is to know how to get to the schools and organizations. Once you get in then what do you do? How do you talk to the athletes and coaches in a way that is supporting them yet driving business toward you? I have always said that the reason my marketing clinics are so successful is because I never forget that the clinic is about them and not me. I make sure they get all the benefits and realize I am there for them. By the end of the marketing clinic, they know my interests are in them and if they want to keep this relationship going they will need to come see me at my facility or join one of my other clinics or camps.

Too often trainers attempting to get into schools or youth organizations make the clinic about them and make one huge mistake that will ruin there chances for ever getting in to the schools or youth organizations. I see it all the time. There are many other small mistakes that trainers make but nothing will ruin your chances more than this one big one...

In the coming months, I will be teaching my Speed Insider Members exclusive information about the business side of running speed clinics and an athletic development facility. Some of the strategies I will be sharing will uncover how you can make a lot of money, but more importantly build stability in your programs and business. This exclusive information, plus all the other great training information, videos, and cds, will be taken to a new level. Don't miss out! Go to http://www.speedinsiders.com/ and receive your 2 FREE months trail membership.

Yours in Speed,

Lee

PS: If you are looking for success and are tired of making excuses you need to come to my May 16-18th Athletic Speed Formula Seminar. It will jump start your career like nothing else. http://www.leetaftseminars.com/

A Class Act!

Hey, I just arrived home from another great Perform Better Summit. I have to tell you, the people of Perform Better are a class act. They are great to speak with, very knowledgeable about their business, and their leader, Chris Poirier, is a true professional. I certainly enjoy speaking for them, but I mostly enjoy being around the event and having the chance to meet so many great people. It also gives me a chance to catch up with old friends in the business.

Re-Thinking Multi-directional Speed

The topic I spoke on this weekend was Re-Thinking Multi-directional Speed. I spoke at two hands-on sessions and one lecture session. My position regarding this topic is that we must all take a closer look at what is actually occurring with in natural movement of our athletes. We must remember not to dictate how they move before we see what they bring to the table.

We often jump the gun when it comes to coaching speed skills and definitely when correcting speed skills. Let's face it, the body is an amazing machine. It knows what it needs. Sometime we do need to give it some help because of the issues it develops over time (instability, tightness, weakness...). But, for the most part it is pretty good on its own.

One of the important points I made was that we need to teach from a foundation of "Concepts" and "Principles" of movement. We also need to understand basic bio mechanics and laws of physics. Having this baseline of information will serve as your guiding light when coaching. We need to be extremely careful to not fall in the trap of allowing drills to be our foundation. Remember, what I have always taught; drills are only vehicles for skills and techniques to be taught with. Drills fill the tool box, but you have to have the tool box built out of fundamental principles first.

Hips as a Pivot Point

Another key topic I discussed was the fact the hips act as a pivot point for the legs and feet to move from under. When an athlete reacts quickly and needs to accelerate out of a stance the feet will move to a better more efficient position to aid in the acceleration. This is innate. The body figures this out. What is occurring is the hips/pelvis/spine stabilize to allow the legs to move quickly to a new position. Once their the hips/pelvis/spine stabilize to allow the force of the legs to create efficient effective movement.

To often athletes are discouraged from this re-alignment of the feet. They are being coached to move the center of mass over the feet. This is a difficult thing to do when the athlete participates in a sports that is based on random reactions. The athlete is at a disadvantage from the get go. Allow them to move the feet to move the body, not the other way around.

Athletic Speed Formula

I had the opportunity to speak with many people who would like to attend my Athletic Speed Formula Seminar May 15-18 (15th is a special day for Speed Insiders only). It is literally around the corner. If you have not had the chance to register go to http://www.leetaftseminars.com/ now and reserver your spot.

Many of the people I spoke with during the Perform Better Summit wanted more detailed questions answered. I did the best I could but without giving them a foundation. This is why I hold Athletic Speed Formula. It is literally an education in techniques that you won't find anywhere else. You have my attention for the entire seminar. I speak indepth with the things you need and want to know.

Because it is my seminar, I am sure it comes across as me just selling "me". The bottom line is, it is a lot of work to organize this event and for me to prepare the tons of material you receive. And believe me, it would be much easier for me to not even host it. But, I absolutely love every moment of it. I get the chance to meet you and teach you the things that have helped me over the past 20 years. This type of seminar dosen't come along often. I want you to have a special experience and walk away feeling so much more confident in your ability to coach athletes. I promise you- it will be a fantastic seminar. Go to http://www.leetaftseminars.com/ and sign up today. You will be glad you did. I can't wait to meet you!

Yours in Speed,

Lee

PS: Don't forget! For the BEST semianr of its kind, http://www.leetaftseminars.com/ You must attended!

The Tax Man Taketh Away!!

Family Update

Everyone is doing so well. Brennen is cooing like crazy. You can almost see the wheels turning in his tiny head "I am trying to talk but it just comes out all mumbled." Jae and Bailee are having so much fun with him.

This weekend I am speaking at the Perform Better Summit in Chicago. My family is going to come with me. We are going to make a special trip to the American Girl Doll Factory. I guess it is a really cool place- if you like dolls and stuff:) Anyway I am excited to have my family with me for one of my speaking trips. I usually travel alone and it will be nice to have them with me for a change.

Speaking of "Speaking"

Jenn and I are working hard preparing for the Athletic Speed Formula http://www.leetaftseminars.com/ happening May 16-18 (May 15th if you are a Speed Insiders Member). We like most others have been hit hard again by the TAX MAN. So we have decided to extend the early bird special sign up date. So don't worry about it. You can still take advantage of huge savings on your investment in the Athletic Speed Formula Seminar. Don't keep procrastinating though. Before you know it May will be here and you will have missed one of the best seminars of the year.

It is not that often that you get such close up front attention at a seminar. They usually follow the format of "You sit and listen and take notes." The Athletic Speed Formula is an interactive experience where I teach along with you asking questions and giving your ideas. My information will be given to you in a way that you can take notes, practice what you just learned, ask questions about it, make adjustments, practice it again, and be totally on board. You will have opportunities to work with my athletes as well as try the skills and techniques out on yourself and other attendees.

You will walk away with more than just drills. You will learn strategies to be the best teacher you can be. You will learn my systems of training athletes.

It is very important to me that you walk away on Sunday with more than you expected. I want you to feel comfortable with all that you learned so you can implement it on Monday morning.

If you are not completely satisfied that I gave you a ton of useful information that will improve your business, teaching or coaching you can speak to me after the seminar an I will gladly give your money back. You have nothing to lose. Go to http://www.leetaftseminars.com/ now so you can be apart of this ground breaking seminar.

Going Early to the NBA/WNBA or other Professional Sports

In my last blog I asked for peoples responses to athletes leaving school early for the NBA/WNBA. I had some great responses. I have to say I can see the argument that most everyone posted.

I still believe too many people clump everyone in the same category. Not all athletes are mentally and physically prepared, but many are. Kobe Bryant and Labron James were both physically and mentally prepared. Kobe spent much of his life traveling in Europe watching his father play. He learned a real tough style of professional sports (the European League). Labron on the other hand traveled the United States as a high school senior playing in front of huge audiences and nationally televised games. He was interviewed and written about as if he were already an NBA player.

I there is the comments about, Yeah but they missed the great college experience and the coaching. But maybe that wasn't what they wanted. It might not have been right for them. On the other hand- it probably is good for most other players. The key is to have the options for these players. Even if you feel they need to the "College Experience" that isn't always what they want.

I guess I am one of those people that feels you can't have a one size fits all approach. I might have 3 different opinions on 3 different players. But the bottom line is to nurture them in their decision.

Hey, I have to get running so I will talk to you soon. I might be writing from Chicago if I have the time.

Yours in Speed,

Lee

PS: Don't pass up the opportunity to be at the Athletic Speed Formula where you will get such great individual attention and walk away with your questions answered and LOTS MORE! http://www.leetaftseminars.com/

What Would You Do?

I want to know what you think about the question below. But before I ask, put yourself in the shoes of the athletes and try to think how you would react and why. I am also going to give my opinion- but it is only my opinion.

Question: What do you think about an athlete coming out of high school or leaving college early to enter the NBA or WNBA draft? Don't just go with the popular answers- go with your true feelings.

Here is what I think:

First of all, everyone is different. What I mean is that if the player is not a definite a top 10 pick or at least first rounder I say don't go. If you are going to make that move you better get paid well up front. But if you are not a definite high pick where you are guaranteed some money so you can invest and be safe financially.

Secondly, I have heard so many people say "what a shame to skip a college education". Who says they can't get the college education if they choose to. Plus, who says a college education is the best education for everyone. It might be the best for some, but for many it isn't.

Going to college is a time for many kids is a waste of money and time. They throw their education down the drain. For others it is the pathway to a good job.

I received a BS and a MS from college and the best education I have received to date has been in the past 10 years learning more about business and training. I can't really say that I received a good foundation from college. Basically I took classes, rushed to get assignments and papers completed, finished the semester and then started over with different classes.

The role of an education is to set you up for a good paying job. Hmm, does the NBA pay well? I think so. Can you venture off into other businesses and learn the way of business and other avenues of life being around so many influential people. I think so.

Now, I know college is more than just taking classes- I get that. Those other reasons still doesn't make it right for everyone. The underclassman that are leaving for the NBA and WNBA this year will have an opportunity to set themselves and their families up for life. They can still get their education just like many other former players have over the years. But, if the main purpose of college is to get a good paying job, I can't think of too many other jobs that pay that well.

In closing, I want to mention some present NBA players that are doing pretty well and they didn't go to college or came out early. Kevin Garnett, Jermain O'Neil, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Allen Iverson, Shaq, and many others. I know there have been many players that tried to come out early and didn't make it. But, if a player wants to follow their dream of playing NBA or WNBA basketball why is that any different than the student wanting to follow their dream of being a teacher or doctor. It is all about attaining the skills to perform your trade. If they can play the game they can play the game.

There are many other comments I could make about being too young to be around older men at such an young age and traveling all over the country and being seduced by negatives. But as far as I know those same negatives can exist in our world as well.

Give me you thoughts...

Yours in Speed

Lee

I Didn't Get Fired By Donald Trump but I did....

Big Family News!

Brennen rolled over today! I know it's not exciting news for you, but it is for us. He followed his roll over act with a small spit up out the side of his mouth. AH- special memories! Of course, the girls weren't here to see it because they were in school. So what do you think they wanted to do when they arrived home and heard he rolled over... You guessed it. They tried to get him to do it again. Of course he cried and that was that.

Hanging Out with Gene Simmons of Kiss!
As you know from my short quick email from Nashville, I listened to Gene Simmons speak (he was outstanding). He is so intelligent that it is jaw dropping. I was able to have my picture taken with him and actually spoke with him for a short bit. I congratulated him on his son earning all A's in college. He said "That is his Job- that is what he is suppose to do. He has no other responsibilities but to learn and get good grades." He then talked with me about a few other things- very cool man!

I Didn't Get Fired By the Donald
Not only did I meet Gene Simmons, but I also spent a short time with George Ross of the Apprentice and Donald Trumps right hand man. He is a great speaker with a super message about how to be a better negotiator. I really learned a lot from him. He was so gracious to spend a minute with me in the lobby while he and his wife were heading out. I really appreciate busy people taking the time to meet others.

Making The Decision To Be Great!

So often we want to look at all the reason around us as to why we didn't get certain results in our life. The people who become "Great" (this means different things to different people) stop making excuses and start taking action.

It took me a long time to take the next step in my development as a coach. I made many mistakes early on (I still do but I learn from them quicker now). The mistakes were mostly attributed to not being willing to invest in myself to get better. I tried to do everything myself and was too stubborn to invest in a clinic, DVDs, or products that could have helped me. Once I learned the quickest way to greatness is through constant education I took leaps and bounds into a higher level coach.

When I speak to my athletes about putting time and effort into being better. I explain to them this should be their way of investing in themselves. I tell them to stop making excuses and just do the work. There really are no short cuts. I still have athletes, and in many cases their parents, come to me and say "my son is getting any faster or my daughter isn't getting any quicker", My answer to them is let's look at how many times they have been showing up during the week to train. The majority of the time it's like 1 or maybe 2 times a week. This is not investing in themselves. This is an example of setting themselves up to fail.

A couple years ago I had an athlete that wanted to bet stronger but was only committed to come 2 times per week and he even missed one of those days every know and again. It seemed like every other week he was asking me to do a different program because he didn't feel the current one was working. After I read him the riot act for a few minutes, I let him know that I was no longer going to allow him to make excuses to me. I explained to him that he was never going to get the results he wanted because his goals way out shined his effort. Eventually he just stopped coming. Now, it didn't mean I didn't care about the young man. He just needed to know he was kidding himself and failed to invest in his results.

The Deadline is Approaching

In less than one week, my May Athletic Speed Formula Seminar Early Bird Special discount will be over and http://www.leetaftseminars.com/like last year... I had several people email or call saying it is too far or too expensive to commit to. I will have invested nearly $6200 this month alone in seminars, mastermind groups, and personal coaching just so I can get an edge and grow in my personal and business life. I have to laugh when I hear people say they can't afford to invest in themselves. Now, please understand me- I am not saying that there are times when you just can't afford to do something or you just don't have the time to commit...I totally understand. But when you truly want a change for the better you have to get out of your comfort zone and go for you goals and dreams. That means investing in travel and registration fees so you can attend top notch workshops, clinics, and seminars.

This years Athletic Speed Formula Seminar is going to be one of the best Athletic Development Events of the year. I have added more sessions to an already packed event. I listened to the suggestions of last years attendees and added what they wanted. If you are truly interested in my material and information I will be presenting, then you will not miss out on this live event. Time is running out quickly on the Early Bird Discount Special. After April 15, you will pay a much higher price. That is fine with me- but for your sake, I would rather you come at a lower rate. I really hope to see you there. It will be a smart investment into your future!

Yours in Speed,

Lee

Lee and Gene Simmons

Wow! It is almost midnight and I just arrived back to my hotel room after a full day at the Superconference in Nashville, TN. It is the best marketing seminar of the year and I am learning so much. This is going to be a short blog post but I just couldn't wiat to fill you in on what has been happening so far.

The first night (Wednesday) I went to a Gold Plus only gathering where I had the chance to network with hundreds of other motivated entrepreneurs. I didn't waste any time in talking to people so I could hear there story and share mine. I was able to make some great connections that I am sure will be valuable down the line.

OK, here is what happened on Thursday.. The guest speaker was none other than Gene Simmons from KISS! He was unbelievable. What an intelligent man. He blew the crowd away with his marketing and communication skills. He gave so much great information about how to communicate with others to establish winning relationships. He is one smart cookie. He has so many businesses that you wouldn't believe. I will share more later on Gene Simmons. Oh yeah I WAS ABLE TO GET MY PICTURE WITH HIM! Awesome.

Today (Friday) was just as powerful and I learned so much more. All the presenters were fantastic and the information is so user friendly.

Saturday is slated to be a full day with even more great information. I need to get some rest so I can be full of energy to work hard and learn more.

Then on Sunday- I will be apart of a special group that will have the privlage of learning from the master himself--Dan Kennedy. It is a special session on business that I can't wait for.

OK- I need to get rested up for tomorrow full schedule. I will post more soon.

Yours in speed,

Lee
